Our story: Husband and Wife Wedding DJ duo

 We are a husband and wife duo, U-One and Christelle Theron :)  

Our journey started together at the age of 15.

We were only kids and didn't even know what love was when it brought us together.

We grew up in the late ’90s before cellphones and matriculated in 2000. (Which makes us the original millennials)

Mixed Tapes was a massive thing and also a huge gift to receive…the amount of time, work, and effort that went into a Mixed Tape was next-level stuff.

Receiving a real hand-written LOVE-LETTER decorated with hearts, different coloured pens, and other doodles was super exciting….eeeeck!

I can still remember that feeling of butterflies in my tummy.

U-One and I started dating on the 25th of January 1998...Music brought us together.

I played guitar since the age of 7 and had professional guitar lessons. 

Got a grade in playing it and did many concerts in my 10 years of playing.

But it wasn't my dream and it felt like homework – it was a chore, not a passion.

U-One on the other hand is multi-talented and can listen to a song, pick up the guitar and play it without missing a beat.

He is a natural musician and can play multiple instruments with no formal training and I am always amazed by his talent.

I had lessons for 10 years and never had that ability.

After school, he started a few bands and I was the ultimate groupie :) Never missing a band practice or a gig...and always knew that music is part of his life. There was no other way...but the music way.

Play the music, not the instrument ;) 

We moved to Pretoria in 2005 and connected with some very cool musicians and they started a band, baby…starting a band!

Bands popped up all over the show. They were loud, they were good, and they rocked the stages.

In 2008 we went through a short-lived hard time. 

Something had to give...and we had to grow as individuals.

U-One traveled to Jordan for a few months and I carried on with life in Pretoria.

I came to visit my mom in Cape Town during that time and was on a journey of self-discovery, thinking about love, life, and wondering where to from here.

My mom took me camping and we went to Yzerfontein…there’s nothing quite as powerful (for the soul) as sleeping in your tent, waking up, and taking long walks by yourself on a deserted beach.

In those moments you reinvent your thoughts and design a new future for yourself.

One night at 04:00…Both of us were laying wide-awake but worlds apart.

Watching the clock as time pass by until sunrise.

I wanted to send him a message, but my phone kept on losing signal…very annoyed, I got up and started walking around in the camping ground…trying to find a signal somewhere…anywhere.

NOTHING…but in that very same moment, U-One sent a message to me:

“I’m lying awake in an unknown country, and I can’t fall asleep…

You are the only one for me. I'm coming home.”

This is my life, this is my love.

In 2009, we moved back to Cape Town and U-One started working at Oude Libertas Amphitheater, then moved over to various festivals and started working with many well-known artists.

Music is part of our fiber and always has been.

I took his surname and we tied the knot on our actual anniversary date, 25 January 2013...15 years later.

In 2015 we became proud parents of an amazing little girl, Karmanique <3

She was an only child for almost 7 years, and that was our plan, to have one child only...

but after a crazy, attempted car-jacking, but life-changing experience on the N2 we decided to give her a best friend for life, and on the 7th of February 2022 she became a big sister to her sister, Lirike <3 

Today, we are a dynamic and passionate team and we understand the power of love, celebrations, good times, and the dream of your wedding day!

Christelle takes care of the brand, bookings + quotes and U-One takes care of our couples + customers on the day.

Southern Sound was created in 2011.
